Nothing kills the joy of the holiday season quite like feeling stressed or overwhelmed. To avoid this, prepare for decorating ahead of time. Clean surfaces where you know you’re going to place decorations. Check to see if your string lights are working correctly or if you need to purchase a few new sets. Make sure you know where your decorations are and pull them out ahead of time so you won’t have to climb over mountains of stuff the day you want to begin decorating. The more you prepare, the less stressed you will feel.

Remain flexible

One color scheme may look wonderful in a magazine or Hallmark movie when it comes to holiday decor, but it is not always realistic for everyday life. Don’t get too caught up in sticking to a single color, like red or green, throughout your whole house. Instead, keep different rooms cohesive and tie your separate rooms together with an overarching theme. Do you have a collection of Santas you can place throughout the house or garland you can hang on staircases and above windows? This will allow you the flexibility to decorate freely while still creating a cohesive look.

Bring everyone together

The holidays are about family, so involve your whole family with decorating! Include your children’s homemade decorations and ornaments. Bring out old family decorations that have been passed down to you. Add a sleigh bell collar to your pet. Not only will decorating together be fun, but it will also ease the burden of decorating and allow you to get more done.

Add the ambiance

Lights and decor certainly evoke holiday cheer, but you can do more than decorate to bring the holiday spirit into your home. Turn on some classic holiday music while you work or cook for instant nostalgia. Bake cookies to fill your home with that delicious smell (you can even use premade dough). If your Christmas tree isn’t real, light a few pine scented candles—your home will feel like a winter wonderland.

Deck the mantel

Fireplaces are one focal point you can’t afford to leave empty around the holidays. Drape garland or greenery across the mantelpiece and add pinecones and other seasonal accent pieces atop it. Don’t forget to add different sized candles and a string of lights too. Hang a wreath or other piece of appropriate art above it. And if you typically display family photos on your mantel, consider swapping the pictures for some of your favorite snapshots from holidays past.

Bring it outside

One of the best parts about the holidays is seeing the outside of everyone’s homes all lit up, so don’t forget to bring the holiday cheer outside! While hanging lights on the perimeter of your home is a classic look, not everyone can stomach using the ladder required for such a feat. You can stick to a wreath on your door or a small, light-up display such as a snowman. Whatever you do, passersby are sure to smile.
