How to Work With an Interior Designer: The Process

The process of working with an interior designer differs depending on the designer. With Decorating Den Interiors and Erika Lee, flexibility is our specialty. We start every project learning about your goals, budget, and style, so we can determine whether a single consultation or a full-blown redesign is what you need. No project is too big or too small! Schedule a consultation

Whether you were referred to us, found us online, or are a past customer coming back to work on another room, we will first set up a consultation.

During this 90-minute interior design consultation, we come to your home and discuss your vision. You will take us on a tour of your space, and if you have pictures of other rooms and designs you like, you can show them to us for inspiration. Houzz and Pinterest profiles really come in handy!

We can also pick out paint colors, talk about design styles, determine the best traffic flow for your room, and move furniture pieces around. After the initial consultation is complete, we’ll decide whether you need more guidance, want to move forward with a full redesign, or have enough information to complete the rest of the process on your own.

Decide to complete a full redesign

The first step in starting a complete interior design project is putting together a realistic budget. Once we determine that budget, we can begin searching for items for your home, such as the right bed frames, area rugs, lighting, and more.

In about two weeks, we will meet again in person to show you a presentation of what design ideas we came up with for your space. If you like what you see, we will move forward and start ordering the items. Aside from the budget, staying realistic about the timeline of your project is also essential.

You’re in control of when you want the project to start. However, the project’s duration will be highly based on how long it takes to get the furniture, accents, and accessories delivered to your home. Items like artwork, side tables, and accent pieces can typically arrive quicker than a custom sofa.

If you’re trying to complete the project before a specific date, be upfront about that at the consultation. Having a hard end date means you may not be able to order custom items, but instead, items that are currently in stock or will be in stock soon. We will be cognizant of this when we are searching for the perfect items for your space.

For kitchen and bathroom renovations, we can work directly with your contractor to ensure you get the room of your dreams. We can help you choose backsplashes, floor tiles, shower tiles, granite, lighting, fixtures, and paint colors. Since many kitchen and bathroom renovations require going to showrooms or stores to pick out the hardware, accessories, and other items, we can accompany you to these places at our consultant rate.

Use us as your go-to interior design resource

Sometimes, you just need help prioritizing what you want to do. Maybe you want to redo your whole house, but know you’re not ready for a complete overhaul. At Decorating Den Interiors — Erika Lee, we can be your go-to resource for these types of projects. We can help you figure out where to start and develop a plan that makes the most sense for your current situation.

Additionally, if you want new furniture or custom window treatments, we can be a source for that too. We can talk about colors, styles, textures, and patterns and help you find the items that fit your vision. Additionally, we can serve as a consultant throughout your project if you’re working with a smaller budget. You would simply have to pay the per-hour consultation fee, and we can offer insight on how the items you’re choosing would look in your space.

Now that you know more about our interior design process, it’s time to figure out how much it costs to work with an interior designer.

Classy Master Bedroom

Cost of working with an interior designer

When you schedule a consultation with Erika Lee, you will pay $200 for the first 90-minutes. Every additional hour after the first 90-minutes is $150/hour.

After the consultation, if you want us to put together a presentation for a complete redesign, you will pay a 10% retainer upfront. If you decide not to move forward with the project after the presentation, we will keep the retainer for the work we did sourcing and researching items for your home.

When you’re ready to move ahead with the project, we will write up your order, and you’ll put down a 60% deposit. You’ll pay the remaining balance when the items come in and are installed, excluding the 10% retainer fee which we put toward your project if you choose to work with us. We are a full-service interior design company in Cincinnati and will ensure that all aspects of your project are properly installed before you make your final payment.

If you initially hired us for a consultation and then decide to purchase items through us, we can put all or part of your consultation fees toward those items if they meet the minimum project requirements.
